The 2020 Oscarnominees have been announced and with that, oddsmakers have had time to crafttheir predictions for the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony. There are manydistinctions to be scooped up, and among them Best Actor and Best Actress willcertainly hog the limelight for a while.

The Oscars nominations have already prompted the New York Times to take a deeper look at this year's Academy choices issue, and whether the list is 'too male and too white.' Yet, for all the criticism – some justified and some superfluous – most of the nominees deserve their spots.

Best Actor

Oscars

The Best Actor category is packed with some fantastic picks this year and one is just as deserving as the next. Joaquin Phoenix's Joker (-2500) was a dark twist of the popular Batman franchise by ChristopherNolan. Nolan's villain, though, seemed to follow the comics closer whereby Todd Philip's Joker, played by Phoenix, depicted a darker character – a loner, neglected and overlooked by society who acts out back in revenge.

Another gem by Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story falls the unravelling marriage of two creative characters, one a director and another one an actress. Both Adam Driver (+700) and Scarlett Johansson have been nominated in this year's Oscar awards and deservedly so.

Leonardo DiCaprio (+2200) has been teased around the internet for his near-misses on the Oscars for so many years now. What are the actual odds he will win a second one? After his realistic acting in The Revenant, he did win his first award in 2016 with a whole actor's career behind him already.

Hisperformance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino's latest flick,is compelling and satisfying to viewers, and he deserves to be in theshortlisted candidates. Yet, whether he wins is a whole other matteraltogether.

Thanks tohis role in Pain and Glory, Antonio Banderas (+2500) is back foranother shot at the Oscars. This Pedro Almodóvar directed flick is areflective movie in which the main character weighs his past and present choices.

The Two Popes is extremely funny, poignant, and deep. It's no surprise that Jonathan Pryce (+2500) is listed as one of the nominees to scoop up this year's award.

Best Actress

In best actress, we also have a great selection of top nominees. Renée Zellweger (-2000) reinvents herself in Judy to play in the biographical movie that centers around the life of American singer and actress Judy Garland who travels to London in 1968.

Scarlett Johansson (+750) accompanies Adam Driver in Marriage Story, but her acting isn't co-dependent on her acting partner. Johansson brings her character to life and wins the sympathy and affection of the audience, running a full gamut of emotions.

Charlize Theron (+3300) is another one of the big nominees for her role in Bombshell. Though the title invites sensationalism, the movie itself is about several women who work at FOX News and who set out to expose the toxic environment of sexual harassment ushered on by CEO Roger Ailes.

Bombshell is accurate and up to date with today's issue as many peoplein power believe that their position allows them indiscretions with thosearound them. Not in Bombshell, not on Theron's watch.

Next on the list comes Cynthia Erivo (+900) for her role in Harriet, playing the role of Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist who escaped slavery herself and established the Underground Railroad, which in turn helped hundreds of slaves escape the oppression of their ‘masters' – if we are going to put a stretch on the word. Erivo is our personal favorite for the Golden Statute this year in the Best Actress category this year.

Saorise Ronan (+2800) played her role beautifully in Little Women, one of literature's best-known titles published in 1868 and 1869, as a two-volume novel. Ronan's performance sparkling with brilliance aside, the Academy's decision to overlook Greta Gerwig for the Best Director nomination has definitely been the cause of some consternation. Yet, this aside, Ronan played a fulfilling role that will go down in history, and as to Gerwig – her cinematography has an unmistakable brilliance to it.
